The Story Behind SupportMate Academy
How It All Started
Sometimes, the best ideas come when you’re not even looking for them.
I was sitting in my office one day, working on a medication training program for the support workers in my own healthcare business.
As a nurse, I’ve always believed that quality care starts with quality education. Support workers play such an important role in people’s lives, yet access to practical, affordable and relevant training isn’t always as straightforward as it should be.
As I worked through the training material, developing the learning modules, real-world scenarios and assessments, I had a thought.
“Why am I keeping this just for my own team? Why don’t I share it?”
It was a simple question, but it sparked something much bigger.
I realised that the challenges I was trying to address in my own organisation weren’t unique. Across Australia, there are support workers who genuinely want to do their jobs well, build their confidence and provide safer, better care. There are also organisations looking for accessible training that is practical, engaging and relevant to the work their teams do every day.
And that’s where SupportMate Academy began.
What started as one medication training program slowly grew into a bigger vision: an online learning platform designed specifically for the people who support others.
I didn’t want to create another platform where learners simply click through slides, answer a few questions and receive a certificate.
I wanted to create something meaningful. Training that encourages people to think, understand their responsibilities, recognise risks and apply what they’ve learned in real situations.
Most importantly, I wanted education to be accessible, without losing sight of safety, accountability and the importance of practical workplace competency.
SupportMate Academy was built on the belief that you don’t have to be a nurse or hold a university degree to deserve high-quality education. Every support worker should have the opportunity to learn, develop their skills and feel proud of the difference they make.
And while it all started with medication safety, the vision goes well beyond one course.
Because when we invest in the people providing care, we’re also investing in the people receiving it.
What began as an ordinary day in the office became an idea worth sharing.
And that idea became SupportMate Academy.
Learn. Build Skills. Grow. Make a Difference.
